Work process

The sculpting process consists of many phases. Once I have chosen the topic and decided the size of the sculpture, I begin by constructing a metal support structure which keeps the sculpture upright and in position during the process. Using clay, I mould the sculpture itself on top of the support structure. In my work I use either a living model or photographs of a model.

Veistoksen valmistamisessa on monta työvaihetta. Kun olen valinnut aiheen ja päättänyt veistoksen koon, aloitan työskentelyn rakentamalla metallisen tukirangan, joka pitää veistoksen pystyssä työn aikana. Tukirangan päälle muovailen savesta itse veistoksen. Käytän työssä joko elävää mallia tai mallista otettuja valokuvia.

Once the clay sculpture is finished, I spread layers of silicone on top of the moist clay. The silicone forms an elastic inner mould that repeats even the tiniest details of the clay. The silicone mould would not retain its shape without support, which is why I add on top of it a support mould made of plaster. Once the moulds are dry, I open them, remove the clay from the inner mould, clean it and put it back together.

Kun savinen veistos on valmis, levitän kostean saven päälle kerroksittain silikonia. Silikoni muodostaa elastisen sisämuotin, joka toistaa saven pienimmätkin yksityiskohdat. Silikonimuotti ei pysyisi muodossaan ilman tukea, joten teen sen päälle vielä kipsisen tukimuotin. Muottien kuivuttua avaan ne, poistan pehmeän saven sisemmästä muotista, puhdistan sen ja kasaan sen uudelleen.

I cast the final sculpture using plaster, resin or concrete. I pour the liquid mixture into the empty mould and leave it to set. Opening the mould is always an exciting moment – is the cast sculpture complete and intact?

Valan lopullisen veistoksen kipsistä, polyesterihartsiseoksesta tai betonista. Kaadan juoksevan seoksen tyhjään muottiin, jossa se jähmettyy. Muotin avaaminen on jännittävä hetki – onko valu onnistunut?

The cast sculpture still requires some work to remove mould lines and other imperfections. I often give the sculpture a painted finish.
