Steel Relief

 

When renovating the Ainola assisted living residence in Lahti, Harjulakoti Residential Properties wanted to reserve 1 per cent of the costs for art that would decorate the building’s facade. The purpose of the artwork was not only to enhance the entrance of the building but to bring joy to the residents. To achieve this, an open art competition was held in spring 2015. My proposal “From Summer to Summer” won.

As the location of the artwork was an assisted living residence, I wanted to portray the arc of human life from childhood to old age. At the bottom of the work an old woman is watering her garden. The vines represent her memories and thoughts that criss-cross, producing vague forms and shapes. Finally a thought emerges: a moment in summer, a long time ago, when a little girl sat in a swing. Hence the name of the work, “From Summer to Summer”.

Lahtelainen KOY Harjulakoti halusi varata Ainola-senioritalon remontointikustannuksista prosentin taiteeseen, joka elävöittäisi talon julkisivua. Talon sisäänkäyntiä korostavan teoksen haluttiin tuovan iloa asukkaille. Tätä varten järjestettiin keväällä 2015 avoin taidekilpailu, jonka ehdotukseni “Kesästä kesään” voitti.

Koska teoksen sijoituspaikka oli senioritalo, halusin kuvata ihmisen elämänkaarta lapsuudesta vanhuuteen. Teoksen alaosassa vanha nainen kastelee puutarhaa. Köynnökset kuvaavat naisen muistoja ja ajatuksia. Ajatukset risteilevät muodostaen epämääräisiä muotoja ja hahmoja, kunnes mieleen tulee hetki kesältä kauan sitten, hetki, jolloin pieni tyttö istui keinussa. Siitä tulee teoksen nimi “Kesästä kesään”.

Although I am a professional artist, I also have a degree in mechanical engineering and can design not only the artwork but also the technical specifications of its manufacturing and installation. The relief of Ainola assisted living residence is made of 5 mm thick Corten steel plates that were laser cut by a machining company. The plates were attached 10 centimeters from the concrete element wall with expansion anchors. In time, the weather-proof Corten steel will be patinated and gain a beautiful rust-brown colour. This type of artwork is completely maintenance-free with an estimated lifespan of at least 200 years.

Vaikka olen ammattitaiteilija, minulla on myös mekaniikkainsinöörin koulutus, joten pystyn itse suunnittelemaan ja valmistuttamaan vastaavat teokset. Ainola-senioritalon reliefi on valmistettu 5 mm paksusta Corten-teräslevyistä, jotka laserleikattiin konepajalla. Levyt on ripustettu elementtiseinään kiila-ankkureilla 10 cm etäisyydelle seinästä. Säänkestävä Corten-teräs patinoituu kauniin ruosteenruskeaksi ajan myötä. Tämäntyyppinen teos on täysin huoltovapaa ja sen arvioitu kestoikä on vähintään 200 vuotta.
